Understanding with the heart

Excerpts from the improvised conference of Sheikh Aly N’Daw,16 March 2013, Mauritius

The example of Mulla Nasruddin is a good illustration of this situation. One day he said to his wife: “Oh, if it’s sunny today, I will cultivate the land and if it rains I will gather wood.” So, he has two options for the day. Here he is, adapting reality to his plans!

His wife said to him: “As a Muslim, you could at least say Insha Allah.” As she was very persistent, he replied: “Can’t you see that I will have something to do whether it rains or not? So why should I bother saying Insha Allah, Insha Allah!” When he woke up the next morning, it was a sunny day. As he had previously planned, he said to his wife: “I will go to the fields.”

On the way he met a few soldiers who asked him for directions to a certain village. He replied that he could not remember. So the soldiers said: “Really ? As you can’t recall where the village is, we will refresh your memory so that you can remember !” They started beating him up until he finally admitted: “Oh ! I can now remember!” So he walked along with them, all day long until they finally reached the village late in the afternoon. On the way back, it started to rain. Throughout the entire journey, the Mulla was directly exposed to the rain. It was almost one o’clock in the morning when he reached home, completely drenched and with aching limbs. When he knocked at the door, his wife was very surprised and asked: “Who is it at this time of night ?” So he answered: “It’s Nasruddin, Insha Allah !”

This is how we live our religions – “if you do this you get that, if you do that you get such and such!” It is therefore not surprising that, in terms of outcomes, we have achieved nothing! Yet, we continue to operate in this way. If we look at the history of humanity, from the beginning up to now, from the first to the last Prophet (pbut) and the Saints who were their successors, we can see that each of them came to show an image of God who can make the world a better place. This is the tool that humanity needs to make a better world; otherwise we will create an image of God to protect oneself from the world. In fact there is no need for this protection, as you are only protecting your ego.
